A Bargain Hunt fan was thrilled when he got the opportunity to appear on his favourite daytime show with his mother-in-law.

Phil Wainwright, 40, of Digby Drive, Oakham, became a fan of the BBC One show Bargain Hunt when he spent a year as a stay-at-home-dad when his first son Orson was born.

His partner Claire Welsh put him forward for the programme with her mother Jill Welsh, an antiques fan.

But the family thought no more about the application until February when Phil received a call inviting them to an audition. They were successful and filmed their show in the summer.

Contestants buy three antiques from their budget of £300 with the help of an antiques expert and under the watchful eye of show host Tim Wonnacott. They then sell them at auction with the aim of making a profit.

Phil said: “I think the producers liked the dynamic between us because we’re both a bit mad and I’m 6ft 3 in and weigh 20 stone and Jill is tiny.

“On the show you can visit four antiques places but after 50 minutes out of an hour, we hadn’t bought anything! There was a bit of panic but it was a really good laugh as well.”

The pair bought their items in Horncastle, Lincolnshire, and the auction took place at Batemans Auctioneers in Ryhall Road, Stamford.

They were helped by antiques expert Jonathan Pratt.

Jill, of Glen Drive, Oakham, said: “We were surprised to get through the audition stages but it was such fun.

“Jonathan was lovely and Tim was a bit of a rascal.”

Phil and Jill, along with Claire, Orson, now three, and the couple’s other son Darwin, 18 months, are all planning to watch the show together.

Jill, 69, who is retired, said: “You’ve got to be able to laugh at yourself.”

Phil added: “I don’t know whether I’ll laugh or cry when I wa5tch the show! The pair have been sworn to secrecy about the result.

The show will be on Friday next week at 12.15pm on BBC One.
