Approval for children's centre plans
A VILLAGE will get a children's centre providing midwife clinics along with educational activities after plans were passed.
Wittering Primary School will become the hub of the community after Peterborough City Council passed plans to create a 300,000 centre at the site.
Councillors approved the council's own planning application on February 23 to build two single-storey extensions at the school, in Church Road.
One of extensions would be used to house the new centre; with the other, a conservatory, providing extra classroom play space.
The idea of the children's centre is to provide support and information for parents of children up to five years old.
The centre will include office accommodation, kitchen facilities, a consulting room and play spaces for youngsters.
Headteacher Bob Laurie hopes that the centre can be used for midwife clinics, health visitors and educational support outreach teams, and added that the extension will create a community hub for the village.
He said: "It will be used for giving support and information to parents and I see this as a great way to develop the community side to our school.
"It will have no effect on the school building, but, as many of the young children in the area attend our Flying Wings Nursery, I hope parents will use it as a drop-in centre."
There is potential, according to Mr Laurie, of the centre also becoming a place where JobCentre services could be provided.
The centre was put forward by Peterborough City Council as it needs to develop a children's centre for the west rural area of the city boundaries between 2009 and 2011.
Mr Laurie added: "It's not so much for the school as it is for the whole area.
"It will give something that Wittering has not got at the moment - a place where community services can operate for the people in the area."
