Arsonists set fire to a cottage near a derelict former boarding house.

A fire crew was called to Lonsdale House in Barleythorpe Road, Oakham, at 5.50pm on Friday. They found a small fire in a neighbouring cottage, which they put out before it caused any serious damage.

It is believed the fire was started deliberately.

The cottage is part of the old Rutland County College site, which is being cleared to make way for a Sainsbury’s. The cottage will be demolished as part of the work but the nearby Lonsdale House, which is owned by the college’s former owners Tresham College, is not due to be knocked down.

Two fires were started in Lonsdale House itself in 2012. A spokesman for Tresham said the building was boarded up and regular security checks were made to ensure there was no-one trying to break in.

Tresham currently has no plans for Lonsdale House.

A previous version of this story said the fire was started in Lonsdale House. We are happy to correct the error.
