The cricket season is in full swing and preparations for Stamford’s event of the summer are racing ahead, following the announcement of three new stars this week.

Stamford School coach and former England cricketer Dean Headley is currently assembling the teams for Sport Bash, a two-day cricketing extravaganza at Stamford on July 25 and 26.

Ex-England fast bowler Alex Tudor has confirmed he will be lacing up his bowling boots to play for the All Stars XI against the Local Legends XI on the first day, while Leicester Tigers star Matt Smith will take to the field for the Tigers legends, who will take on a Northampton Saints legends side for the second Twenty20 match on day two. Former teammate and Tigers stalwart George Chuter will provide the commentary for the match.

Tudor, who played in last year’s event at the school, took 351 wickets in a 14-year career and will be best remembered for scoring 99 not out for England in a Test match against New Zealand as a nightwatchman.

Smith is a former Oakham School pupil and regularly played cricket in the local leagues before signing for the Tigers.

He has scored 26 tries in 154 games for the Leicester side.

Organiser Dean said: “I’m delighted that the teams are building and a fine couple of days are coming together.”

Crowds will be entertained by a flypast by a Hurricane and Spitfire on the afternoon of the second day.

There will also be the popular Under 10s Chesterton and Humberts Kwik Cricket Competition, interactive cricket road show the ECB Cricket Factory, the Leicester Tigers Maul, One Touch Football’s inflatable shoot out, Lynx Golf Zone, a bouncy castle, and live music in the evenings, as well as food and drink stalls from local companies.

The first day will help raise funds for the Thorpe Hall Hospice appeal. The second day will be held in aid of the Matt Hampson Foundation.

Dean added: “The array of activities on offer for the whole family is so varied.

“The matches will be the main attraction but there really is something for everyone.”
