Bluebell walkers raise funds
A SPONSORED walk around Rutland Water raised more than £3,000 for a cancer charity.
About 70 people entered the annual bluebell walk around the Hambleton peninsular, organised by the Rotary Club of Rutland, on Sunday.
The money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Support.
Organiser Roger Cooke said: "The heat of the day may have deterred some walkers from taking part but the amount of money raised has exceeded our expectations.
"Rotary is very pleased with everyone's efforts and would like to thank all of those who took part."
Among the walkers was blind man John Walker and his guide dog Adele. He has supported the Rotary Club of Rutland since it started funding talking newspapers for the blind more than 20 years ago.
There were also teams from Oakham Primary School, Knossington Grange Therapeutic School and Melton Mowbray Building Society.
Rotarian Malcolm Mann said: "Rutland Rotary raises large amounts of money for local deserving causes but could not continue to do so without the valued support of local people who give up their time and participate in these events.
"We hope to be able to stage the Bluebell Walk for many years to come."
