Brewery plans to change pub in Oakham

The future of a pub in Oakham is unclear after its owners applied for planning permission to extend it and change use of one of its floors.

Brewery company Everards has submitted a planning application in the hope of building a front and rear extension at the Horseshoe Inn in Braunston Road.

The application also includes changing the use of the pub’s first floor from residential accommodation to a drinking establishment, extending the floor space of the pub.

The Leicester-based brewery says it has no immediate plans to sell the venue despite the changes, but has not ruled out a sale in the future if the application is approved.

Communications co-ordinator Micky Sandhu said: “We are currently exploring the various options available to us in relation to possible future uses for the site, including retail, restaurant and indeed a pub in a reconfigured
format.

“We currently don’t have any idea of costs but it’s not uncommon for applications of this nature to be made for our existing sites as we regularly invest in our pub estate through acquisitions, refurbishments, and redevelopments.”

The plans have been met with objections by those who believe it will be sold to a supermarket chain. They include Jon Whowell, secretary of the Rutland branch of the Campaign for Real Ale.

He said: “This is a well used pub which is very popular with locals and has had Camra awards in the past. It is also a community hub and supports local events and charities.

“It was Ruddles Brewery’s first pub and only purpose built one.

“This would be a piece of history lost forever, and as no economic reason exists for its conversion, this would be a disaster.”
