Budding artists showcase work

MORE than 100 young artists put their best work on show at the Catmose Gallery in Oakham.

The show opened on Thursday last week at a reception attended by students, parents and teachers plus Oakham mayor Jan Fillingham and the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Dr Laurence Howard, who presented prizes for some of the work.

It is the second year the exhibition has been hosted by the Oakham Decorative and Fine Arts Society with prize money donated by Mike Goldmark of the Goldmark Gallery in Uppingham.

Oakham artist Alan Oliver judged the competition.

Chairman of Oakham Decorative Fine Arts Society, Caroline Webb, said: “There were more entries than ever this year received from primary schools in Oakham, Uppingham, Cottesmore, Exton, North Luffenham and Whissendine, as well as from Brooke Priory School and the Parks School in Oakham.

“Students from Vale of Catmose College, Casterton Business and Enterprise College and Uppingham Community College also took part, together with pupils from Oakham and Uppingham Schools.

“I hope that all schools in Rutland, including those which did not participate this year, will join in the 2010 exhibition.”

The display is on show until tomorrow.
