Car parking charge rises are approved in Rutland

CAR parking charges are being increased in Rutland.

From April 1 drivers will have to pay more to park in Oakham and Uppingham after Rutland County Council's cabinet decided to put up prices at a meeting on Tuesday.

The cost of a one-hour short stay in Uppingham will go from 10p to 40p, two-hour stays will rise from 70p to 1.10 and three hours will cost 1.50.

In Oakham the charge for off-road parking for one hour is going up from 60p to 70p, two-hour stays will be increased by 20p to 1.10 and three hours is up by 30p to 1.80.

However, Uppingham has not been as adversely affected as initially feared.

A survey endorsed by the county council had recommended increasing the cost of one-hour short stay parking in Uppingham from 10p to 70p, two-hours from 70p to 1.10 and three hours from 1.10 to 1.80.

Those recommendations provoked fury among businesses in the town and a petition to scrap the increases was launched.

But members of the council's cabinet opted for a range of lower increases at a meeting on Tuesday, saying they recognised the strength of feeling.

County council deputy leader Terry King (Con) said: "We recognise that Uppingham is in a slightly different position to Oakham. We have considered the differences in Uppingham and have taken on board a lot of what has been said."

Uppingham Chamber of Trade chairman Sarah Groundsell, who runs Made Gallery, in Orange Street, said she was pleased the rises were lower than anticipated but vowed to fight on to get the increases scrapped.

She said: "It's better than had initially been proposed and I am pleased that we had some effect on this.

"But we are going to carry on our campaign to stop the rises."

This week an increase of up to 25 per cent in parking charges in Stamford was given the go-ahead.

South Kesteven District Council's increases mean it will cost 3 for people to park all day in a long stay car parks - a rise of 40p, and an hour's short stay parking will now cost 1, up 20p.

The council is also introducing a 50p charge for 30 minutes at its short stay car parks.
