Careful Karl's on right road to saving £££s
MANY motorists have been hit by fuel prices this year but one economical driver reckons he could end up saving £400.
IT worker Karl Dyson, of Charlock Drive, Stamford, has taken on a cash-saving motoring phenomenon from America called hypermiling.
It encourages people to find ways of decreasing fuel consumption, to save cash and be greener.
Karl, 27, recently launched a website promoting the scheme – www.hypermiler.co.uk – outlining ways of being fuel-efficient, such as avoiding rush hour traffic and cutting speeds.
He says hundreds of people have already logged on and has plans to develop the site.
“It’s all about using common sense, taking it steady and adapting your driving style,” he said.
“It’s a good time to be taking this approach with the credit crunch and even my managing director who drives a Porsche is trying to get his miles-per-gallon up.”
Karl, who lives with fiancee Tina Simmons and son Kian, one, says tips such as keeping windows closed to avoid drag has boosted his fuel economy.
He says his 10-year-old Peugeot 306 uses about 64.5mpg, compared with 42mpg last year, a saving of about 400.
Hypermiling has been in criticised in America for some techniques like turning off the engine while driving and using the brakes less.
But Karl says he would not condone “more advanced” methods to save fuel. Police have also stressed that drivers should not use any techniques which would be considered dangerous.
Karl is now considering a new car which could be even more fuel-efficient. He said: “I’ve always been quite frugal, as well as into the driving scene.
“At the moment people are looking at their wallets and that’s what it comes down to.”
