A NEW community garden has been officially opened.

Representatives from Stamford Town Council, South Kesteven District Council, the police, Stamford Transition Town and the Stamford Community Orchard Group gathered at the allotments in Uffington Road, Stamford, to see the new garden opened.

A tree was planted by Stamford mayor John Binder and a cheque for £1,000 towards the costs was given by district council estate supervisor Jason Hall.

The site has been cleared and once finished, it will provide a place for people to learn how to grow their own produce and use it at home. There will also be a range of example gardens to show that no matter what style of garden you have, it is still possible to grow your own.

Stamford Community Garden committee secretary Heidi Haxeltine said: “We were so pleased with how the opening went and everyone enjoyed it.

“It is good to see our plans coming together.”

Coun Binder added: “I wish the project every success for the years to come.”

Vic Couzens builders have offered to clear the site while Stamford Horticultural Society will help design the gardens, which should be in place by the spring.
