Council wants your views on tax increase
A council has launched a consultation to find out residents’ views on a tax increase that could bring in an extra £200,000.
The Government has offered South Kesteven District Council the chance to increase its share of the council tax bill.
The council froze its tax in 2012 but this year wants to add an extra £5 a year to bills for band D homes.
This would mean a band D resident would have to pay a little under 10p more per week.
Council leader coun Linda Neal (Con) said it was important to take the views of residents into account before any decision was taken.
She added: “The Government has recognised that spending cuts have posed particular difficulties for councils which were already low cost.
“As a result we are one of only 50 authorities in the country who have been given dispensation to increase their share of the council tax above the nationally prescribed two per cent.
“This is in recognition of the fact that we are a well-run and efficient council.
“The Government has also recognised that urban councils receive 50 per cent more per head of population than rural areas despite evidence that many services in districts like ours are more expensive to deliver because we cover such a large area.
“We have made no council tax increase for two years and if we make a small increase now it will mean that in future years we will not have to make as large an increase as we might otherwise have to.”
Over the last two years the Government has cut more than £2.4m from the district council’s budget.

Consultation ends on Feburary 8. Drop-in sessions will also be held at Guildhall Arts Centre in Grantham between 2pm and 5pm on February 4 and at the same time at Market Deeping Community Centre on February 5.
Lincolnshire County Council, Rutland County Council and Peterborough City Council have all announced tax freezes.
