Villagers are celebrating after a planning application to build 34 homes in Morton was refused by district councillors.
An application by developers Larkfleet Homes to build the houses, including 12 affordable homes, on land off Bourne Road, in Morton, was turned down by South Kesteven District Council’s development control committee, which met on Tuesday.
Morton and Hanthorpe Parish Council had raised serious objections to the development and residents who attended a public meeting also had concerns about the plans.
Parish council chairman the Rev David Creasey said: “We are pleased and relieved because we made a significant effort to put our case against the development to the district council.
“This is an unnecessary and unwanted development in the village.”
The parish council objected to the application because it was concerned about the impact additional traffic would have on the village, the lack of available local school places and concern about provision of a safe crossing on the A15.
The parish council also believed the houses would be out-of-character with the rest of the village.
South Kesteven District Council planning officers had recommended the plans be turned down because it is a greenfield site which is outside the village and away from the main facilities.
The report said building in this location to the south of Morton, the centre of which is designated a conservation area, would “encroach on the open countryside”.
Officers also said the development would “fundamentally change the existing linear pattern” of the village which was a key characteristic of Morton.
A Larkfleet Homes spokesman said: “Larkfleet is very disappointed with the council’s decision to refuse its proposed development of 34 new homes in Morton as it believes the development would further meet the local need for open market homes in the area.”
