Couple from Thurlby to celebrate 70 years of marriage
Maurice and Marjorie Kelby
A couple from Thurlby will celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary on Monday after a lifetime of happiness together.
Maurice and Marjorie Kelby were married at Thurlby Top Methodist Chapel, Bourne on March 25, 1943.
It was pouring with rain on the day, but life turned sunny for the wartime marriage of a soldier of the Royal Artillery from Dover and a secretary from Northorpe.
Now aged 91 and 95, they will celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary among their family and friends at Qu’Appelle“Care Home in Bourne where they both live. Marjorie now has Alzheimer’s but the couple are together in Bourne.
After wartime service Maurice joined the Civil Service working for the Ministry of Food and then the Ministry of Labour finding jobs for people. For many years he was the local contact in the Bourne area finding suitable employees for businesses.
Maurice was an umpire for Northorpe Cricket Club and was also sacristan at St Firmin’s Church,
With the arrival of a daughter, Heather and then a son John, Marjorie was involved in all aspects of life in Thurlby, as a Methodist preacher and WI secretary. She later worked as a secretary at Lloyds Bank in Bourne, at BRM and later for Bourne Services.
The couple have two grandchildren, Gavin and Rebecca and two great grandchildren, Ross and Reece.
