Cricket medal goes to Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq
A MEDAL honouring a lifelong cricket fan has been awarded to Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq.
The Padmore Medal was launched in the memory of Robert Padmore, 43, of School Lane, Baston, who died of a heart attack in November 2005 after watching England play Pakistan in a test match series.
The medal is awarded to the player who, in the opinion of the team coaches, has made a memorable contribution to his team’s success in an England versus Pakistan series.
This year England coach Andy Flower and Pakistan coach Mohsin Khan picked Pakistan captain Misbah ul Haq. The player led his side to a first-ever clean sweep in the history of series between the two countries, dating back to 1954.
Robert Padmore’s parents, Terry and Gwen, flew out to Dubai to present the medal following the third test of the series.
The medal was introduced by the England and Wales Cricket Board and the Pakistan Cricket Board to honour Robert, who was described as the “ultimate cricket fan”.
Medals were issued to Monty Panesaar in 2006 and Eoin Morgan in 2010.
A dedicated member of the Barmy Army, Robert was well used to travelling abroad to watch the Three Lions, and he had been to South Africa and the West Indies before heading to Pakistan.
He was especially fond of the sub-continent, relishing the opportunities of meeting the enthusiastic local fans and talking cricket with them.
Following Robert’s death the England team wore black armbands in his memory. Six more medals have recently been commissioned to be presented at future series.
