Cross nears completion
STAMFORD's £1.4m Gateway project took another step forward this week as the finishing touches were carried out on the Eleanor Cross.
The bronze top in Sheepmarket was installed on Wednesday and a further brasswork cross was being put at the very top today. Work will soon be under way to clean the square's pavement, install stone seats around the cross and install bronze studs in the cross and the pavement of the square.
The artist responsible for the sculptural elements of the scheme, Wolfgang Buttress, said: "The cross is like a beacon for residents, visitors and tourists to navigate their way through Stamford. It is going to look great when it is first seen and will look even better in five, ten or 50 years time."
A tree has also been planted in Sheepmarket, close to the bus station ramp.
l Contractors have carried out remedial works on the electrical boxes which supply market stalls in Red Lion Square after water got into them.
