Crowds pour to market in rain

A DICKENSIAN street market drew shoppers to Bourne on a rainy Sunday as part of the town's festive celebrations.

Shops around the town opened for the Victorian themed event complete with street entertainers Philleas Fopp and Montague Dandy, who strutted on stilts, rode Penny Farthings and juggled their way through the crowds.

And to round off the day mayor Shirley Cliffe switched on the Christmas lights outside the town hall. She was assisted by Father Christmas, who also dished out gifts to children from his grotto in the Corn Exchange.

Bourne Grammar School Soul Band and choir members sang on stage and pupils from Bourne's Westfield and Abbey primary schools also sang.

Bourne Chamber of Trade and Commerce chairman Jane Good said: "Considering the weather I thought it went very well.

"I haven't had chance to talk to any of the other businesses but the comments I received were good."

A late night shopping event is being held on Friday. The chamber of trade is encouraging shops and businesses to stay open for an evening of Christmas shopping fun.
