Dad's boxing challenge

A FATHER hopes by boxing clever he can raise thousands of pounds for his sons' primary school.

Andrew Sayers, of Suthern Close, Oakham, is to compete in a charity boxing event where he will fight three two-minute rounds to raise money for Friends of English Martyrs Primary School in Oakham.

His wife Joanna is chairman of the school's parent teacher association and a school governor.

Andrew, 38, a director of a computer software company, was attending a business awards dinner in November when there was a request for people who would like to take part in a charity boxing event.

He said: "There were 2,000 people in the room and I thought, what are the odds?"

Although he had never taken part in a boxing match in his life before, after being called for a fitness assessment he was one of 16 selected. And now he is determined to win.

He said: "I'm going to try to come out of it with brains unscrambled and dignity intact but it could be too late for that."

Andrew's two young sons, George, eight, and William, five, are both rooting for their dad and Joanna is writing a blog with details of his training and pictures.

He said: "It seemed too good an opportunity to raise what will be a sustantial lump sum for the school. I'll be really disappointed if I don't raise 5,000.

"The whole thing is going to be recorded, so I hope it will be my hand that they raise."

Andrew trains six days a week and gets up in the early hours to drive two and a half hours to the Ring Boxing Club in Southwark, South London for a vigorous sparring session prior to going to work.

He said: "I am doing a lot of sparring with people of various shapes and sizes and seem to be making good progress.

"The shock to the system was absolutely immense. It is a hard game and these guys are very very fit."

Computer industry publication Computer Reseller News is organising the event, which is its first ever fight night. It takes place at the Brewery, in Clerkenwell in the City on May 29. To sponsor Andrew go to www.andysayers.blogspot.com or log on to justgiving.com/andysayers
