A determined woman is set to lace up her running trainers to tackle the London Marathon in a bid to raise funds for a good cause.
Katie Bangs, 22, who lives in Brooke Road, Oakham, is taking on the 26-mile run in aid of the Meningitis Trust.
Katie chose to run for the cause after her dad, Andrew, fought the illness seven years ago.
Katie said: “My dad had the illness when I was 15 and at first he thought it was just a bad bug.
“But then he started showing all the symptoms of meningitis and managed to get treatment just in time before it got worse.
“He’s lucky to be alive because if he had left it any longer he wouldn’t have survived.
“And that’s why I came up with the idea to run for the charity. I want to help others suffering from the disease.”
Katie, who works at care home Crown House in Oakham, has been sticking to a strict training plan in preparation for the run.
The furthest she has run so far is 13 miles and she has been running regularly after work.
She said: “I’ve never done anything like this before but I’m really pushing myself to get through it.
“It’s all a bit daunting but I’m really excited and really looking forward to it now.”
Katie is hoping to reach her target of £1,600 for the charity.
The London Marathon takes place on April 21.
