Deepings Raft Race could yet be salvaged

A river race threatened with cancellation may yet be saved after supporters and committee members rallied round to form a new group.

The future of the Deepings Raft Race looked in doubt last week when the Rotary Club of The Deepings withdrew its support.

The club took over the organisation of the race in 2011 but after a poor turnout last year decided it could not afford to run this year’s race.

Supporters of the event, which has been held on the River Welland in August for several decades, were shocked at the news.

After some discussion on Facebook it was agreed to form a new committee and try to rescue the race.

Chairman Kevin Barber, who took part in the race before leading the previous committee for two years, said: “We are trying to resuscitate it.

“We are looking for sponsorship and hands-on help. We are trying to get a strong committee of people with time and willingness to get involved.”

The race has raised thousands pounds for charity in previous years and has been a highlight of the calendar in the Deepings.

Mr Barber is hopeful a smaller event can still be organised for this year.

He added: “It would really hurt to see it die. If it doesn’t go ahead one year it is so hard to resurrect it.”

If you would like to get involved in the committee in any way, contact Mr Barber on 07703 016492 or visit the raft race Facebook group.
