Enjoying the great outdoors
AN ORIENTEERING day at Bourne Wood has been hailed a success.
More than 160 people of all ages turned up to the event on Sunday, which was organised by Lincoln Orienteering Group. About 50 of them were over the age of 60.
Although, the day was organised as part of a community initiative with Lincolnshire County Council to encourage older people to keep fit and active, the day was a success with everyone young and old.
Group vice-chairman Sean Harrington said he was pleased with the turnout.
"A lot of it depends on the weather, but we were lucky and there were about 160 people," he said.
"The county council is trying to promote elderly people getting fit and active and there were quite a few elderly people at the event, so we were pleased.
"The feedback we got was very positive."
He said people taking part came not only from the Bourne area, but from further afield.
Courses ranging in distance from one km to 10km were available to try out on the day.
The aim of orienteering is to navigate in sequence between control points marked on a unique map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time. It does not matter how young, old or fit you are, as you can run, walk or jog the course and progress at your own pace.
