The 150th anniversary of the death of Helpston poet John Clare has been marked.

A commemoration event was held at Clare Cottage, the poet’s home, on Tuesday last week with music from folk duo Pennyless, the choir from John Clare School Helpston and the UnEarthed artists.

Five artists have joined forces with the John Clare Trust to hold an exhibition at the cottage until September 28 with artwork referencing Clare’s own manuscripts, poetry and prose.

The artists have developed their own impression of the life and personality of the poet and of his influences.

The residency is funded by a lottery grant through Arts Council England and by Vivacity Peterborough.

The John Clare Trust purchased John Clare Cottage in 2005, preserving it for future generations. The cottage has been restored to create a centre where people can learn about John Clare and his works.
