A businessman has sold the laundry company which has been in his family for generations.
Hedley Stroud has retired as chairman of Bourne Textile Services and sold the company to Johnson Service Group in a deal worth £22m.
The business was founded in 1932 as Bourne Hygienie Laundry to offer a washing service to the local area.
It has gone on to become one of the leading hotel laundry companies in the country, supplying 350 businesses and delivering more than a million items of clean laundry each week.
Mr Stroud said: “I joined the family business in 1981 and over the last 33 years it has continued to advance and the recent addition of a second laundry now means that we have one of the largest, most efficient sites for processing high volumes of hotel linen in the UK and Europe.
“I was convinced that Johnson would be a good home for Bourne and just as importantly that Bourne as a business would be a good fit for Johnson.
“It is a large public company which has an excellent reputation in our industry and have successfully absorbed family companies in the past.
“I know that with its substantial resources Bourne will go from strength to strength and I wish Johnson and all of the staff a very successful future.”
Bourne Textile Services, which is based in Cherryholt Road, employs more than 350 people.
A spokesman for the new owners said there were are no plans to cut the number of staff.
Chief executive officer, Chris Sander, said: “I have known Bourne Textile Services for many years and have been very impressed with the quality of their business. It is a great addition to the services we provide.”
Johnson Service Group’s existing businesses include Apparelmaster, which focuses on workwear rental, Johnson Cleaners and Stalbridge Linen which provides premium linen for hotel and catering businesses.
Operations director at Bourne Textile Services, Richard Clark, paid tribute to the Stroud family.
He said: “Hedley and his family, both past and present, should be immensely proud of what they have achieved over their 82 years of business and what they have brought to Bourne.
“Special thanks must also go to all the employees over the years who through their dedication and hard work have helped the company achieve so many goals, enabling us to be where we are today.
“It is a sad day to see the Stroud family end its connection with the laundry industry but I believe we now have a fantastic opportunity for Bourne to continue its growth under the new ownership of Johnson Service Group.”
