Firefighters seek heroic helpers

FIREFIGHTERS have been trying to trace three men who helped put out a fire at a restaurant this morning.

The blaze broke out in the kitchens of Nuova Vita in High Street, Oakham, at about 2.15am.

When fire crews arrived they found three men had put a garden hose through one of the windows in a bid to put out the flames.

Firefighter Mark Draper said: "We haven't been able to trace these lads since the fire but they did a sterling job in helping to keep the fire at bay.

"It was also them who called 999 and because of their quick actions we got there just in time - any later and the flames would have spread to other properties."

Two engines were called to the scene and two firefighters with breathing apparatus went in to tackle the blaze, which had engulfed the kitchen area at the back of the property.

Flats above and next door to the restaurant were evacuated as the smoke started to spread but residents were allowed back in soon after.

Mr Draper said: "There is extensive damage to the area which will require structural and electrical work to make it safe."

Fire investigators finished examining the scene this morning but the cause of the fire has not yet been revealed.
