The Commonwealth Flag was raised at a special event outside the Rutland county council offices in Oakham on Monday to mark Commonwealth Day.

The nationwide event marked the first time ever that local authorities and civic dignitaries, community groups and charities have joined together in local flag raising events and ceremonies of dedication to celebrate the day.

A specially written Commonwealth Affirmation was read out by Rutland County Council chairman Coun Charlotte Vernon. The Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard and the High Sheriff of Rutland Trish Ruddle were also in attendance.
