Formula 1 team McLaren test race car at RAF Cottesmore

A Formula 1 racing car reached 240 mph up the runway at RAF Cottesmore during a training exercise on Wednesday last week.

The 10,000 foot runway that is more used to Harrier GR9s was selected by the McLaren racing team to test their racing cars for the next season.

They have various locations around the UK and in Europe and need a long straight strip of tarmac for the straight line aerodynamics testing.

The Vodaphone McClaren Mercedes MP4-23 is the same type of vehicle driven by Lewis Hamilton and during testing reached speeds of up to 240 miles per hour.

Lewis, who is leading the Formula 1 drivers' standings, was not present for the testing day.
