A group of friends are ready to take on a 3,000-mile rally race across Europe for charity in a cheap car modified by themselves.

The four-strong team of drivers from Rutland are competing in this year’s Scumrun, a five-day rally which starts in the UK and features teams racing to unknown destinations across the continent in cars which must be bought for less than £500.

The friends have already chosen and designed their car - a 1996 Rover 827 Limousine which has been painted and modified to look like an F-14 fighter jet from the iconic 1980s film Top Gun. The vehicle has 84,000 miles on the clock.

The group includes Stuart Spicer, 30, from Oakham; Darren Jones, 29, from Barrowden; and Adam Duffin, 27, and Dave Nourish, 24, both from Knossington. The friends have called themselves Highway to the Dangerzone, after the film’s soundtrack.

Stuart, who lives in Hill Road and works at Rutland Plastics, said: “It’s always something I’ve wanted to do and it’ll definitely be quite an experience.

“You just turn up and don’t know where they are going to send you until the day of the race. You literally have no idea.

“The car we’ve got was a former funeral service car and it’s been made to look like the fighter jet in Top Gun.

“I use it on the daily school run for my daughter Kacey. She’s only six but she’s quite embarrassed by it.

“We’re going to be rotating the drivers in the race but we’ll still do going an average of 750 to 800 miles each.”

The Scumrun has been running since 2006, and was originally called the Scumball 3000.

The group’s challenge will raise funds for children’s charity Wellchild which provides practical and emotional support for seriously-ill children and young people, and their carers.

Stuart added: “We’re raised more than £230 so far but we’re asking for many more to support us in raising as much as possible for such a worthwhile charity.”

The Scumrun starts on May 2.
