Golf club in Rutland hopes to offer guests overnight stays
A golf club is looking to build a new visitor accommodation centre to allow guests to stay overnight in a bid to boost business.
Rutland Water Golf Course has applied to Rutland County Council for planning permission to construct an eight-bedroom building near to its clubhouse on the shores of the reservoir.
The club, between Edith Weston and Manton, has made the move in an effort to attract more customers and improve membership figures.
The club has reported a 30 per cent drop in income for 2012.
Owner Steve Makey said: “Times have been hard and we need to offer something more to attract more customers and remain successful.
“We have been struggling with membership numbers this year because of the weather.
“The building will provide overnight accommodation and it will be good for us just to be able to offer more to our golfers with family and friends wanting to stay and those with and business associates.”
The eight bedrooms will all be doubles with en-suite bathrooms. There will also be a meeting room for visitors. Customers staying at the accommodation will use the club’s current car park.
The course clubhouse is a renovated stone barn and the club says it will build the visitor accommodation in such a way for it to be in keeping with the current buildings and environment.
The club believes the new accommodation will provide three full time and three part time jobs at the course.
Mr Makey added: “It will blend in with the scenery and buildings we have here. It’s not going to be massive or the size of a hotel. It will be low key.
“We would also like to put a meeting room in there, were people can sit back and read a paper.
“It’s all about just trying to improve the facilities we here to attract customers.”
The consultation period is set to end on January 30, when the golf club will learn whether its application has been approved.
