Harrier at RAF Cottesmore removed from the gate

THE Harrier outside the gate at RAF Cottesmore was removed today (Wednesday), marking the end of an era for the station.

RAF Cottesmore is winding down as bosses prepare to close the base at the end of March, ahead of the Army taking moving in during the summer.

A huge crane arrived to move the Harrier GR3, which has stood at the gate since 1999. It will be stored at the base and later moved to the military’s air traffic control centre in Swanwick, where it will be a gate guardian.

The Harriers, which completed their final flight in December 2010, have been sold to the US Marine Corps in a deal worth £110m.
