ONE of the area’s most beautiful estates has gone on the market - for £14.75m.

The Holywell Estate, near Stamford, has been described by a property consultancy as “the perfect English estate”.

Selling agent with the Norwich branch of Bidwells James Brooke said: “This is probably the most romantic and exceptional estate I have had the good fortune to be involved with.

“It has been lovingly cared for over its life and offers everything one would expect from a quintessential English estate of its kind.”

It dates from the Norman conquest and since the 1950s has had three owners.

At the centre of the estate is the Grade II* listed Georgian hall, which is built of Clipsham stone with a Collyweston tile and slate roof.

Holywell Hall has five reception rooms, 10 bedrooms, eight bathrooms and an annexe.

There are five lakes, an orangery, fishing temple, dating from 1764, private chapel, two cottages together with a selection of ancillary buildings including garaging.

The stables, which are also Grade II listed, have been converted to office use and there is also a manege.

In addition there is a productive arable farm and flourishing pheasant and partridge shoot, which has received help from The Game and Wildlife Conservation Trust.

The dovecote dates back to the 1400s and is thought to be the oldest building on the estate. Part of the walled garden, it now is used as a fruit store.

In all the estate is 930 acres.
