More than 250 guests attended the opening ceremony of the new Rutland Showground.

The facility was officially opened on Thursday evening by the Lord Lieutenant of Rutland Dr Laurence Howard who was driven to the ground’s new pavilion in a tractor.

The £1.6m development is situated on land north of the Oakham bypass and will host Rutland Agricultural Society’s 182nd Rutland County Show on June 1.

It will also be home to Oakham Rugby Club, Royce Rangers FC and the Cottesmore Pony Club.

Speaking about the new pavilion, show director Emma Dodds, said: “It’s a lovely room which will lend itself to lots of different activities from weddings to Zumba.

“The views from the large windows are wonderful. In the summer it will be an amazing space for parties and any outdoor events.”

Rutland County Show moved to Burley-on-the-Hill when it outgrew the agricultural society’s old showground.

The new showground is the result of 10 years of hard work by the society to secure its future. The society has thanked the owner of the land at Burley-on-the-Hill, Joss Hanbury, for allowing the show to be held there.

This year’s event is set to feature more than 150 catle, 200 sheep, 100 goats and 500 equine entries competing in various classes for prizes.

There will also be trade stands and food vendors promoting local produce, demonstrations and displays of vintage cars and tractors, as well as interactive games.
