Hundreds of people attended the sixth annual Stamford Christmas Festival yesterday (Sunday).

There were more than 200 stalls selling a huge range of Christmas gifts for all the family, as well as decorations and refreshments.

Visitors were walking around the fair tucking into a hog roast, a bag of roasted chestnuts or sipping on a glass of mulled wine.

The weather stayed dry but winds on the day meant problems for traders keeping the covers on their stalls.

One woman who was trading in Gooch’s Court fell and hit herself on a wall when a gust of wind lifted the stall cover off at about 2pm.

The woman was treated by St John Ambulance before being taken to Peterborough City Hospital with minor injuries. She was released from hospital the same day.

Organiser Ali Hawley-Smith said the incident had not put a dampener on the day.

She said: “I spoke to the woman involved last night and she was absolutely fine. She’s a regular trader on the Friday market and has been at the Christmas market for the last three years.

“She said she had a great day up until then and she knows that these things happen.

“St John Ambulance was absolutely fantastic. I can’t thank them enough.”

Following the incident, traders were advised to take the covers off their stalls and the event finished about an hour earlier than expected at about 3pm.

Ali said otherwise the event had been a huge success.

She said: “We had immense support from the town and our volunteers. I have had some feedback from traders and they were really pleased with how the day went.

“The Santa’s grotto was very popular with the children queuing in the High Street to see Santa and the entertainment tent was absolutely packed, particularly during the mince pie eating competition.”

Ali thanked the volunteers who made the day possible, as well as Stamford Town Council for its support.
