Jeakins Weir submits final plans for 96-home Oakham estate
Detailed plans by builder Jeakins Weir for a 96-home estate on a scenic approach into Oakham have been revealed.
The development in Uppingham Road has been the subject of much controversy.
An outline application was approved only after a planning inspector overturned the county council’s decision to refuse it.
The new plans feature 10 different house types, which would be mixed across the development. The estate would be built in several phases and would include new access from Uppingham Road.
No-one from Jeakins Weir, based in Corby, was available to comment on the latest application.
Outline plans for the site were refused by Rutland County Council in February, 2011 because it objected to the development of open countryside.
But Jeakins Weir appealed and fought the council at a planning inquiry, saying the homes were needed to meet government housing requirements.
The county council’s core strategy, which sets out the need for development in the area, required a minimum of 1,100 homes be built by 2026.
The council said the target would be met by Hawksmead’s 1,000-home development to the north of Oakham.
But Jeakins Weir argued there would be a shortfall and the homes in Uppingham Road were needed to fulfil the target.
Despite passionate protests from several Oakham residents, planning inspector Mary O’Rourke agreed and granted outline planning permission.
