Guys and Dolls is this year’s big show from Stamford Amateur Musical Society - and cracking the whip over the cast will be Joanne Henderson.

Jo, 40, who joined the society at the age of 13, has been given the chance to direct after 27 years as a performer.

Her first role was in the chorus for the 1985 production of Carousel and she went on to play the lead role of Julie Jordan in the 2005 production of the same show.

The society is also something of a family affair for her as her sister, Louise Hewett and her mum, Val Hewett, are also members. Indeed, Jo followed in mum’s footsteps in 2004 when she played Lois Lane/Bianca in Kiss Me Kate - mum Val played the same role in 1984.

Following a successful run with Oliver in 2012, the society has a complete change this year with Guys and Dolls, a musical set in 1950s New York and with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser.

The action centres on a gang of loveable gamblers and their long-suffering gals. Songs from the show include Luck Be A Lady Tonight and Sit Down You’re Rocking The Boat and the action also features the sexy Hot Box dance troupe.

The society has also been delighted with a number of new members who have joined the cast and crew for the new show.

Guys and Dolls will be at the Corn Exchange Theatre, Stamford from Tuesday, April 9 to Saturday, April 13. There will also be a matinee performance on the Saturday.

Principal roles are from Guy Sharman as Sky Masterson, Dani Wheeler as Sarah Brown, Andrew Cleaver as Nathan Detroit and Sharon Middleton as Miss Adelaide. Musical director is Roger Loose and Nicola Sandall is choreographer.

During show week the society will be raising funds for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, a charity chosen in memory of Dani Wheeler’s father, Bob Short, who lost his battle against lung cancer last year. Tickets ranging from £10 to £13.50 are available from the Corn Exchange box office on 01780 766455.
