These youngsters will be donning a hat for the day to raise awareness of a charity effort and it is hoped others will follow suit.

Rocking Horse Nursery in Rutland Road, Stamford is just one of the places taking part in Wear a Hat Day, which falls on Thursday.

The annual day was set up by Brain Tumour Research to raise awareness of its work and to raise funds.

People can take part on any day in March as the month is Brain Tumour Awareness Month.

Local charity Anna’s Hope is backing the day and urging schools, nurseries, businesses and other organisations to get involved in the day by either donning funny hats or holding hat parties.

Anna’s Hope, which was set up by Rob and Carole Hughes in memory of their daughter, is a member charity of Brain Tumour Research and Rob is a trustee.

The children at Rocking Horse Nursery will be making hats during the week and staff said they were pleased to get involved and looking forward to a fantastic week of fun.

Carole said she was delighted that schools and organisations, like Rocking Horse, had signed up but is hoping more will do so.

She said: “Brain tumours are the UK’s biggest cancer killer of children and young people and for those who survive their lives can be significantly compromised.

“So to help raise awareness and if possible funds we are asking nursery groups, school children, students, workers, indeed everyone, to get involved by wearing a hat.

“From best hat and hat throwing competitions to raffles and passing the hat to collect donations, every penny raised for Anna’s Hope will help make a difference to children in the region diagnosed with a brain tumour.”
