Join Win in knitting tiny hats!
A CHARITY that supports older people is asking Rutlanders to start knitting tiny bobble hats to help boost their funds.
Age Concern is taking part in a campaign to raise awareness about keeping warm in the winter.
And they would like people to support them by knitting woolly hats that fit on the top of Innocent Smoothie bottles.
The hats will be sold at Sainsbury’s supermarkets throughout the country and 50p from each sale goes directly to Age Concern – 47p of which will go direct to Age Concern Leicester and Rutland.
Oakham area co-ordinator of Age Concern Leicestershire and Rutland Sue Bamber said: “It is a good way of highlighting the importance of a healthy diet, of keeping warm in winter and raising the profile and money for Age Concern.”
Win Gladding, of Noel Avenue, Oakham, is one volunteer knitter who already has a pattern and has so far completed 34.
Win, 65, a volunteer driver for Voluntary Action Rutland and knits while she is waiting to collect people from hospital or doctor’s appointments.
Blankets and jumpers she has made have been sent to people in Croatia and Africa and last year she knitted hundreds of scarves, raising 500 for the Dystonia Society.
The grandmother of six said: ”I like to be busy, I’m not a great TV fan and I can’t sit and do nothing.”
Each of the Age Concern hats has a pom pom and takes her about an hour to make but more knitters are needed. If you don’t have enough wool, Win can provide some.
Anybody who would like to get involved should contact Sue Bamber on 01572 770324.
