Join eco-warrior Lewis in saving the planet

A YOUNG eco-warrior is doing his bit to help save the planet by asking mums and dads to leave their vehicles at home for small journeys.

Lewis Baker, ten, wants motorists to walk a mile instead of using the car for small journeys to reduce the area's carbon emissions.

The pupil at St Gilbert's Primary School, in Foundry Road, Stamford, said: "Last month we were learning about green issues and there was also an advert on TV asking people to drive less.

"I thought five miles was too much so what I want is for people to walk for a mile-long journey instead of driving it, because that's a bit easier.

"When I started looking into this project I realised it's important to cut carbon emissions. Also, getting people to walk a mile instead of drive will help keep them healthy. If people walked for the mile there would be less congestion and more places for people who travel longer distances to park."

And Lewis has a plan to take his message to the people. He said: "I'm making up some posters with a slogan on them, something like 'Walk not ride - save the planet'."

Lewis also helps the environment by being part of his school's Green Group. He said: "We're in charge of recycling, litter picking and planting flowers. It's great fun."

Lewis enjoys F1 racing and said: "They are making an F2 car which runs on fruit. I didn't take much notice at first but since I've been doing this project I think it's amazing."

Teaching assistant Clare Camp said: "We had an eco-week and projects like this really make children think. They took home a cut-out of a foot and wrote what their family could do to help save the environment."
