A boy has lost more than 3st 7lbs to be able to fulfil his dream and fly out to Kenya to carry out aid work.
Bourne Academy pupil, Jack Graham, 17, has just returned from a month in Kenya where he helped build a school and dig flood defences.
Jack heard about the opportunity when Camps International came into his school to talk about the chance to carry out community and environmental projects in Kenya.
Jack said: “I knew it was something I wanted to do but I also knew that at nearly 18st I didn’t have the fitness required to do the work.”
Jack used his desire to make the trip as his inspiration to help him lose nearly four stones in seven months.
In December Jack joined the local Slimming World class run by Ann Gammage on Monday nights at the Darby and Joan Hall in Bourne.
He said: “Walking into that first night was really nerve racking. But I really needn’t have worried though because everyone was really friendly and supportive.”
And after months of hard work in July Jack flew out to Nairobi to start his work.
He said: “It was a good experience but it was a bit of a shock to see how differently they live.
“The work was really hard but seeing first hand what a difference it made to peoples lives really spurred my on. I definitely would not have coped if I had been the size I was before though.”
After his life changing trip Jack is determined to lose even more weight and has eye on taking part in another aid trip to Tanzania in 2015.
Jack’s weight loss success also saw him selected for the national finals of Slimming World’s Young Slimmer of the Year Award, with a £2,000 prize at stake but he missed the competition because he was away in Kenya.
But Jack said: “The memories and friends I have made will last me a lot longer than any prize money would.”
