Kimberley and Adam Day say thank you for support following family tragedy
Two teenagers have said thank you to everyone who contributed to a fund which has raised £35,000 following a family tragedy.
Kimberley and Adam Day, now aged 16 and 14, lost their parents Toby and Samantha and their young sister Genevieve, six, in tragic circumstances at their home in Robin Crescent, Melton.
The Day Trust Fund was set up by our sister paper the Melton Times, with the full backing of the Rutland Times and the family, to support the teenagers.
The communities of Rutland and Melton took Kim and Adam to their hearts and the fund has topped £35,000.
Kimberley and Adam, pupils at Catmose College in Oakham, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who has helped us this year, the people who have contributed to the trust fund, and also people who have done little things like put a smile on our faces.
“The public support has been amazing. It really does show that great things can come out of terrible things.”
An inquest held last month found that Toby, who was emotionally or mentally disturbed, had attacked his own family before turning a knife on himself.
The tragedy happened just a week after he had been dismissed from his post as an inspector with Leicestershire Police for gross misconduct.
At the time of the hearing the trust fund stood at about £23,000, but since then an amazing £11,000 has been donated by former police colleagues who held a ball and auction to help the children.
Another £1,000 has been raised by Belinda Chapman, of Syston, between Melton and Leicester, as a tribute to Toby who spent four years helping return her son Cihan to her after he was abducted.
She raised the money by asking people to make a donation in return for having their photo taken with her Olympic torch.
And coin collections took place at every performance of the Trevonne panto at Melton Theatre last week, where Kimberley was performing in Aladdin. A cake stall and dressing up week at the theatre also raised about £500.
A coffee morning will also be held on Saturday at 10.30am at Market Overton Cricket Club in aid of the Sam Day Foundation, which was set up by Sam’s parents Janet and John to enable children to fulfil their potential.
There will be various stalls, a tombola and raffle.
