Members of a knitting group have been busy making a range of little clothing garments for a children’s ward at a hospital.

The Oakham Knit and Natter Club has made and donated more than 50 items, including hats, socks and jumpers, to the neo-natal unit at Leicester General Hospital.

Club chairman Joyce Lucas, who set up the popular group in October last year, said: “All the members have worked so hard in knitting the clothes and it’s great to be able to support such a worthwhile cause.

“The group has so much enthusiasm and everyone is doing their bit.

“I used to work at Leicester General Hospital so it was rather nice to be able to help.”

Marie Hough, fundraiser for the University Hospitals of Leicester, was grateful for the clothes.

She said: “The staff here are delighted and we’re very grateful for such an array of knitted goods.”

The club won the Rutland Christmas Tree Festival, which raised £2,400 for WaterAid.

After a break for Christmas and New Year, the group is set to hold its next meeting on Thursday next week from 10.30am to 12.30pm, at Oakham Castle.

The fees are £7 for six weeks paid in advance or £1.50 per session.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are included and the venue is wheelchair accessible.

Tuition is available if someone wants to learn to knit. Wool and needles are provided free.

For more information about the club and to join, call Joyce on 01572 755718.
