A new zebra crossing will be completed in Stamford in the new year as part of a scheme to help reduce the number of car  journeys.

Lincolnshire County Council is installing the zebra crossing in Casterton Road and making improvements to the footpath in Sutherland Way, Stamford, as part of its community travel zone scheme, which aims to reduce  the number of short car journeys made.

The council set aside £320,000 last year in its budget to implement the schemes.

They were the most favoured when the council carried out a consultation in 2010 asking people in Stamford where the money should be spent.

The council had originally proposed to spend the cash on creating a 20mph zone in Stamford town centre and install 27 speed bumps and a mini roundabout.

That plan was scrapped because of public reaction to it. Stamford Town Council called a public meeting, which was attended by more than 100 people, who objected to the plans.

Once the zebra crossing is completed, the council will upgrade the footpath in Ryhall Road, making it wider to create space for a cyclepath.

Senior project leader at the council Les Outram said: “The zebra crossing on Casterton Road is almost finished and will be operational early in the new year.

“The new cyclepath on Ryhall Road will run from the Friary Gateway out as far as Rutland Road.

“We hope to have this open in March.”
