Make a date for first Mercury Go Green Fair
A GREEN fair organised by the Mercury is aiming to prove helping the environment can be simple, fun and thrifty – with the facilities to make a difference right on your doorstep.
The Go Green scheme will be rolled out at Stamford Arts Centre for five days from Monday, March 23.
A whole host of stalls led by different businesses will be crammed into the centre to demonstrate a range of green ideas to help people slash their energy bills and shrink their carbon footprint.
Green-minded resident George Hetherington, 71, of Kettering Road, is helping pioneer a week of easily-accessible information and says it is an exciting opportunity he hopes people will make use of.
He said: "The whole idea of the fair is to make it easy for the people of Stamford to be green. What we're doing is putting it on a plate.
"Normally people have to travel or scour the internet for information on being greener but this will make things easier as businesses will be there to talk face-to-face.
"As some will be there all week you can go home and think about things and come back."
Among ideas likely to be offered to people who come to the fair include rainwater harvesting, solar panel investment and loft installation.
Mr Hetherington has had solar panels installed at his home, converting sunlight into energy. It is an investment which will save him a bundle in bill money in the long term.
"These measures are much easier than people think and it means you can help the environment and also save money," he said.
Mercury deputy editor Mike Roberts said: "The Go Green Fair builds upon our campaign last year to encourage everyone to do their bit for the environment.
"The fair will be a chance for businesses to put their green services and products on display and for people to see how they can help themselves, their purses and the environment by taking advantage of what's on offer."
Among the businesses already signed up are Staffordshire-based firm Receau, which specialises in rainwater harvesting and tells its customers they can make the free and valuable commodity of rain work for them.
It says many people don't realise how much water they waste, or how easy it is to conserve it. Rainwater, it explains, can be used for practically everything in the house – barring drinking water, which only accounts for two per cent of consumption.

Representatives from Ecoflow's Peterborough branch will also be showing up at the fair. The network marketing organisation offers health environment and lifestyle products through 8,000 distributors across the globe.
