Market trader's delight at licence return

A MARKET trader says he is thrilled after a licence was granted to enable him to continue selling fruit and vegetables.

Steve Byrne, 44, was embroiled in a dispute with South Kesteven District Council, which he claimed had given him permission to run his stall on the High Street in Stamford four days of the week, as well as his usual Friday market stall in Broad Street, Stamford.

But the council reduced this by two days because of a complaint, which was filed by a small independent business.

While Mr Byrne was waiting for a decision to be made, he was given a temporary licence to trace on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Mr Byrne, who also runs a stall in Oakham, has since re-applied for a 12-week licence, which the district council granted last week.

He said: "I am absolutely over the moon that it's all sorted out and I have got my licence back.

"I found out last week and it is fantastic news and just puts my mind at rest about it.

"I have got this 12-week licence and I am just going to see how it goes."

He said he had been heartened by the support of his customers, many of whom had written to the district council.

Mr Byrne, who lives in Leicester, said: "I just want to say a big thank you to all the people who have supported me while this was going on because it means a lot to me."

Mark Jones, who is service manager community safety and licensing at the district council, said: "Mr Byrne has now submitted his application for street trading consent, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday for the period August 24 until November 13.

"The application has been accepted and will be processed following a visit by a member of our Licensing team to inspect his stall."

Mr Byrne's stall will be trading as normal from next week when he returns from holiday.
