A trainee teacher has set himself a triathlon challenge to raise money for a “special” pupil who was seriously injured in a road accident.
Matt Williams, 31, will attempt the Terry Wootton Roade Sprint Triathlon in Northamptonshire on September 28.
Matt, of Welland Way, Oakham, is supporting the Matt Hampson Foundation. Through the charity the money he raises will go to the family of Seb Goold.
Seb, a pupil at Stamford Junior School where Matt is learning his trade, suffered life-changing injuries when he fell from a moving coach in April.
Seb, from Wansford, is now recovering from his injuries in hospital and Matt hopes to help his rehabilitation with his fundraising.
“It was an easy decision to support Seb,” said Matt. “The way he has started his recovering is great. His determination and desire to get better is inspirational.”
Matt specialises in sport and was in regular contact with Seb last year in PE lessons. Seb was known as a talented rugby player and footballer, and took to any sport he tried.
Matt said: “He showed great enthusiasm before the accident. He was an ever-present.
“He had a great sense of humour and that hasn’t changed, which is truly incredible.
“His was a good year of sportsmen and he was in the top few. He’s always asking questions. He’s a pretty special boy.
Matt, who began his second year of training at Stamford Junior School this week, has been to visit Seb and his family in hospital several times since the accident, which happened on the A47 near King’s Lynn on April 13. Seb was on his way home from a tournament with Stamford Rugby Club.
“For everyone it was a major shock,” said Matt. “Everyone who knows Seb was asking about him and his family.
“It was a tough time but it’s on the up and we hope to see him soon.”
And while Seb’s rehabilitation will be a long process, Matt is encouraged by what he has seen.
He said: “Seb’s always loved his fitness and his training so he’s loving his rehab. He’s looking forward, which is good. He’s looking forward to what he can do.”
The Matt Hampson Foundation was set up by former rugby player Matt Hampson to help injured sportsmen and women.
The charity raised more than £15,000 for the family at Stamford’s Sport Bash event in July.
