More police to get stun guns

MORE police officers in Lincolnshire are to be armed with Taser stun guns in the extension of a pilot scheme.

The guns, which are capable of delivering a 50,000-volt electric charge, will be carried by an additional 21 officers.

Previously the weapons were issued to armed response officers only, but 10 forces across the country are taking part in an extended pilot, which will see officers from the operational support unit deploy the weapon.

Assistant Chief Constable, Peter Davies, said: "Taser will only be used when officers are facing violence or threats of violence of such severity that they need to use force to protect the public or themselves.

"We hope that this extended use of Taser will enable early resolution of conflict situations and reduce the possibility of injury to officers and offenders."
