New Look store to move into former Woolworths shop in Stamford

A CLOTHING store will be opening up in the former Woolworths store in Stamford next year.

New Look will be leaving its current home in the High Street and moving into the larger store in the spring.

The shop has stood empty for months after Woolworths went into administration last year closing 800 shops nationally.

News of the move has been welcomed by traders and it is believed that New Look's current home will be taken over by another clothing company.

Over the last few weeks a number of new shops have opened up in Stamford, including Simply Ginger in Red Lion Square, and Teatree Bay in the High Street.

A spokesman for New Look said: "We have always traded very strongly in the town, but felt there was a great opportunity to give our customers more in terms of our offer and environment.

"The new store will be four times larger than the old and will certainly be store of first choice for fashion and value in the town."

New Look exchanged contracts on Tuesday last week and hopes to start re-fitting the site before Christmas.

The company hopes to open in February and March but says it has not yet been decided whether the new shop will incorporate children's and men's' clothing.

New Look says that it has agreed to sell its current store but has not revealed if any jobs will be created by the new move.

The news has been welcomed by one of the store's new neighbours, Celia Hall, who manages Walkers Books. She said: "It is fantastic and I am really pleased. We just don't want a big empty shop.

"New Look is a nice shop and I hope they do a bigger range.

President of Stamford Chamber of Trade Tim Lee is also pleased that the large shop has been let and to see new businesses opening up.

He said: "We are delighted because quite a lot of shops have opened up in smaller premises and it is really quite exciting as this was the only large one.

"People are optimistic about the future and it is not just national retailers and phone shops. They are boutiques and interesting businesses, it bodes well for Stamford's future."
