The new mayor of Bourne took over the reins at the town council’s annual meeting held at Bourne Corn Exchange on Tuesday.

Coun Bob Russell is the new mayor for 2014/15, taking over from Coun David Higgs. The vice-chairman is Phillip Knowles and both said they were honoured to be given the roles.

In his outgoing message, Coun Higgs said it had been a privilege to meet so many dedicated residents and volunteeres during the year.

But he said his biggest highlight had been awarding the first freedom of the town to Paralympic ski star Jade Etherington, saying: “It was the day history was made for Bourne and that was such a special privilege.”
