People have the chance to express their creative side and try their hand at arts and crafts at workshops which are set to be held in Oakham.

Following a facelift and revamp, an art workshop has been set up by Sarah Kearney at Buttercross House in Market Place.

The workshops will be held on the first floor, above the shops and galleries, in an area which has been specifically designed for a range of craft fun including furniture uplifting, felting, cake decorating, painting and much more.

The first local artist to hold a workshop at the venue is Sarah Watson.

Sarah, who is a committee member of Rutland Open Studios, is hosting an animal portraiture masterclass, where visitors are being invited to bring along pictures of their pet or favourite animal and Sarah will teach them how to paint them using watercolours, pen and ink.

The class is set to run from 10am to 3pm on Friday, January 25, and Sarah Watson is very excited at the prospect.

She said: “It’s a really exciting venture and feels very fresh and positive.

“There’s an array of talent in this county and it’s an amazing opportunity for local artists.

“I know that Sarah has had no problem in finding people to run courses and now I hope that people will turn up and make the most of it all.

“Producing art is massively therapeutic and very good for the soul.

“I would like people to turn up for my class with two or three pictures of their pet and animals that inspire them and I will try and teach them styles and techniques, and hopefully they’ll walk away with something they can be proud of.”

Sarah’s class costs £85 for entry, which includes refreshments, lunch and a glass of wine. Materials will be provided.
