Oakham School staff pay tribute to pilot killed in helicopter crash

Tributes have been paid to a former Oakham School pupil who died in a helicopter crash in London.

Captain Peter Barnes, 50, was killed after the helicopter he was flying crashed into a crane on top of The Tower, One St George Wharf on Wednesday. A passer-by also died and 13 people were injured as a result of the collision.

Mr Barnes, who was born in Nottingham and lived in Reading, Berkshire, was a pupil at Oakham School from 1974 to 1979.

Roger Blackmore, who was his house master and still works at the school, said: “Peter was a lively member of the house who contributed much to the school through his personality and sport.

“He was a very talented under 16 squash player at the school and was a very active student who achieved his Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award.”

Headteacher Nigel Lashbrook added: “We were all saddened by the news of this accident and of Peter’s death. Our thoughts are with Peter’s family.”

Mr Barnes flew for both the Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance and Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance.
