Oakham to represent East Midlands in Britain in Bloom final

Oakham will once again battle it out in the annual Britain in Bloom UK finals after the town was chosen to represent the region.

The Oakham in Bloom committee took gold and won the town category when it was judged for the East Midlands in Bloom competition.

Regional In Bloom bosses then put the town forward for this year’s Britain in Bloom competition. From more than 1,000 entrants, Oakham is one of the 80 finalists.

Britain in Bloom judges will visit the town in the summer and will be taken on a tour of local projects by the green-fingered volunteers on the Oakham in Bloom committee, who will be hoping to win a national gold award.

The category winners will then be announced at a ceremony, which will be held in Cleethorpes in September.

Headof regional develop-ment for Britain in Bloom Andrea Van Sittart said: “Britain in Bloom saw a 30 per cent uplift in sign-ups over the past year and this year, we have a record number of finalists.

“It seems more people are prepared to donate time and energy to projects like this, because they’re aware that improving their neighbourhoods can change lives and boost people’s confidence, health and happiness.”

She wished the volunteers from Oakham luck in the finals.

The Oakham committee has made it to the Britain in Bloom finals several times and took first place in 2007.
