A pub has raised a glass or two in celebration after it was crowned Rutland’s pub of the year for the third time.

The Crown Inn, in High Street East, Uppingham, has been awarded Rutland Campaign for Real Ale Pub of the Year for 2014.

The Grainstore Brewery in Station Approach, Oakham, came second in the season awards.

Alan Pickersgill, who runs the Crown Inn with Philippe Larroche, said: “I was really surprised to get pub of the year as I have seen how hard the pubs in Rutland are working to keep their businesses running in these tough times.

“Philippe and I are very grateful to our loyal band of locals, our staff and Rutland Camra for honouring us for the third time. We are very proud.”

Dave Laughton, pubs officer for Rutland Camra, said: “With 28 pubs a week closing across the country and Rutland losing 10 per cent of its pubs in the last year recognition of excellent pubs is important to keep these centres of community activities open.

“This is the closest competition we have ever had. Candidates for our awards are nominated by our members with quality of beer being the highest category.

“Alan and Philippe, the landlords of the Crown Inn and their staff demonstrate the highest standard of beer keeping, consistently delivering excellent ales and real ciders.”
